shady summer beneath the trees

I’m in prog-rock heaven lately. Tangerine Dream, among other groups. Industrial by Foetus (aka J. G. Thirlwell aka Steroid Maximus aka Manorexia). lazy week, aside from working on Latin transcription and such. Off to Oregon in four days and counting, which is very exciting. Looking forward to seeing all my family and friends, and of course to my friend Paige’s wedding (the initial reason for me going back west, among other things!).
I watched a couple of World Cup games this week; watched us win against Algeria on Wednesday, and lose 2-1 today against Ghana. Oh well. Hung out with friends both times, and the beer flowed copiously, and there was much merriment.
I’ve been in hermit-mode of late, haven’t left the house much. I suppose all that will change when I’m in Oregon, though, as I’ll be seeing people and hanging out with everyone, so it’s okay. I’m enjoying it while it lasts. Nicole made some delicious ribs tonight — with a sauce made with blackberries, and they were really good. It’s been a good weekend so far.
Still loving my new phone. I may have mentioned that I put some new ringtones on it — spliced and snipped some of my favourite ambient/electronica tracks and made them into ringtone-suitable lengths. Nicole graciously transferred them via bluetooth to my phone; I don’t have bluetooth on my desktop, so it’s impossible otherwise. The phone did come with a USB cable, but in order to put anything on there, you need to use a memory card; it’s ridiculous. Once I get a new laptop, I won’t need to worry about using Nicole’s laptop for bluetooth though.
Life is good, overall, and I’m even, thank the gods, getting a final check for teaching, coming in this coming Friday. I’m very happy about that. In any case, I’m around, so if you’d like to get in touch with me, you know where to find me. Cheers.

cloud-gatherer and wielder of bright lightning

in the past few days there have been ridiculously powerful thunderstorms here, and torrential downpours of rain. all intermittent and schizoid, which is becoming the norm here rather than an exception, I’m finding. yesterday it was absolutely pouring buckets of rain, and we went out and drove in it, strangely enough, to go get some food and such. When we watched it from inside, the thunder was raging and cracking and it sounded like an intergalactic war, complete with pyrotechnics. Rivers were forming in the grassy area behind our flat. When we were driving, then, I could barely see five feet in front of the car, and the wipers on high were barely getting rid of the rain as fast as it came. As we were pulling into the parking lot of the restaurant, the car’s steering even seized up because of all the rain, and I ended up killing and restarting the car to get it to work again.     I just saw a post on my Facebook about “Killzone 3, SOCOM 4, and Gran Turismo 5.” Notice what’s wrong with that phrase? All sequels. It’s what’s wrong with videogames, with movies, with society in general. Everything a facsimile of a facsimile — what did Chuck Palahniuk say — “A Xerox of a Xerox,” no? Plato and Aristotle would be going absolutely apeshit over all of this modern wizardry we have. Such a lack of originality. We are becoming the MagiTek monstrosities and The Great Old Ones’ North Central Positronics, moreso every day. And I don’t know how much we even realise it. I think some of us do but it’s still alarming how fast things are moving, exponentially so. 24hr cerebral impulses. (more…)

summer’s in full swing now. a week and a half left of actual class, really, and a trip to Oregon ahead. homecoming. νόστος. travelling backwards through time, gaining sunlight and shedding moonlight. changing time zones is the only time you can say you’re truly time-travelling. music flows like liquid in my veins and through the ears. learning German, although I’ve been slacking lately. Need to get on more of the Latin transcription I’m supposed to be doing as well. busy, busy, busy, but a lot of time for relaxation, introspection, calmness. (more…)

These days my entries have been more fractured and less focused. Such is life. I do what I can to give a glimpse into my life, a snapshot if possible. I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

talk to me if you'd like to know something about me, or keep reading. I'm still a poor grad student and working on my PhD. I don't really know whether this will become a book anymore, but it's not wholly improbable.
