memorial day. happy memorial day to all. It’s not only a holiday from work for most of us, but also a chance to remember those who have died, not only our loved ones, but also those who have died in service to our country. I’m not huge on patriotism, but I do appreciate and acknowledge the loss of life that has, for better or worse, made our country the way it is today. but I try to think of it more abstractly as a day to celebrate all the world’s dead, our comrades in the earth’s embrace. long week indeed. Memorial Day weekend helps, another day of shelter from the workings of the world, the grinding cogs. the light’s flickered, extinguished, like a gas stove blown out, but the pilot light was resurrected. a slow, leisurely descent to Acheron, but yanked back before the river was fully crossed, which is alright. they always ask you where you’ll be in 5 years, or where you envision yourself. I didn’t think I’d be here, but life is full of surprises. but you recoup, decompress, and rebuild, and life goes on, although it’s never quite the same. (more…)

got paid today, but that money seems to go shorter and shorter distances. Nicole and I went out to dinner tonight, which was great, and much-needed for morale. afterwards the night was so nice out, after a rainstorm, that we decided to drive a little ways away from home, taking one of the different highways that go out of town. the sky was a brilliant blue and pink with the dying sunset, and rain still sprinkled from the sky. we had our windows down. not long after we got on the highway, it started pouring again, so windows up. but we looked out at the fields passing by full of grazing cattle, flickering glimpses here and there out my window, misty meadows stretching out seemingly for miles. low hills.
we eventually turned around and came back home, since it was getting a little worrisome in terms of weather and the road was getting rather wet. tonight I just fucked around with mp3s, music and such, and Nicole chilled out too. we’re going to Cedar Key tomorrow to get her some incense, since this shop there is the only place she knows that has this particular type. otherwise just another weekend.
aside from the fact that LOST ends this Sunday night. There’s no other way than me staying up until 12 or 1am that night. my students will understand.

it’s been a long, long time now. Jenn came and visited us, and we travelled a lot. The car blew up. Not literally, but problems abounded. fixed — mostly. Got a transmission flush and an oil change. A few hundred dollars later, it’s mostly fixed — but the check engine light came on again, and I can’t afford to fix it right now. Apparently it could be nothing. Everything seems to be in good shape and it’s driving better than it ever has, so we’re both crossing our fingers. (more…)

just about a week until I start teaching for summer, and i’m relaxing this week. Jenn is coming into town Friday, and I need to get new tires sorted for the car before then, so we can make the journey in safety. the nights have been late and long, sleep plentiful, and sun and heat ever-present. it’s going to be in the 90s most of the week, along with scattered thunderstorms. I’m still getting used to this bloody weather, the heat in particular. the sunroof and four windows help in the car, as does the ever-flowing lovely A/C (often worth the engine performance hit).
