but he avoided the dark death

it’s been a long week, and it’s only Tuesday. dear gods. for the last few days I’ve been working basically nonstop on my thesis, only taking breaks for meals and reading/Venture Bros. before bed. and yesterday I finished my first draft of my thesis, which ended up being 83 pages in total (including a 2pg or so ‘works cited’). that victory was hard-earned indeed. I finished the chapter on biography and the “Second Sophistic” a couple of days ago, after which I worked on my ‘thematic’ and hapax chapters. (more…)

living in the very holy plains of Smyrna

now I find myself living in the midst of a literary Smyrna, with its temples and gardens and shepherds tending sheep. I’ve been immersed in Quintus and his “biography,” or what we can reconstruct of it, for the last couple of days, and I’ve written a good ten pages on just his biography; I figure I’ll write ten or so more on his possible influence from the “Second Sophistic.” I’ve been fucking around with some geographical shit and trying to triangulate his ideas about Smyrna and its geography, so we’ll see how that pans out in my draft. Grand total is around fifty pages now of eighty to a hundred. tonight it’s been cold, and our little space heater is chugging away in the middle of the room. (more…)

the death of winter

glad the week’s over; it’s been rather long. busy writing away, I have about eleven or twelve more pages than I did a week or so ago. Not perfect, but it doesn’t have to be. During the interludes I’ve spent time with Nicole, and during my commute I’ve voraciously read Count Zero, the latest cyberpunk masterpiece to occupy my cerebrum. Almost done with it, in fact, and looking forward to the next book. All that spare time adds up. I don’t want to fuck around with school shit whilst on the bus or train, because it’s nigh impossible to study such things in that environment, so I occupy my mind with pleasure reading. Note that my Loeb speed-read of Aristotle’s Poetics a year or two ago was an exception; I found that electronica helped me focus while reading, regardless of whether it was on the train or not. a wall, nay rather, a war of words

epeomakhia. is that even a word? it’s been a long day today, and a busy week even thus far. I’ve been working as much as possible on my thesis, but of course giving myself a break in the evenings and such, and I have close to 10 pages done on my latest chapter. In the next couple of days I’m going to write a number of pages that will be somewhat easier, partly to pad out the page count but also to just get more done. As I probably said, my goal is to produce a first draft by 30 March. today was busy. (more…)

it’s been a long week. good overall but long. I’ve probably used the TLG more in the past few days than I’ve ever used it, searching for words here and there in every form I could think of. it’s been crazy. And my parents were here, as I said, from Saturday night to Tuesday morn — it was nice to see them for a bit at least, and my mum was incredibly helpful with my thesis. We drew up a new outline together. Right now I’m focusing on linguistic aspects such as metre and hapax legomena, words that are “said once” literally, and only show up once in all of Greek (or Latin) literature. and tonight it’s Saturday night, an overall calm night at home after I returned earlier.     been working on the thesis a lot lately. goal is to finish it by 30th March, at least one draft of the whole thing. a lot of work ahead. parents were in town last sat to tuesday of this week. will write more about it later, most likely tomorrow when I’ve some time.
until then, take care, and I’m sleeping like a shade soon.

These days my entries have been more fractured and less focused. Such is life. I do what I can to give a glimpse into my life, a snapshot if possible. I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

talk to me if you'd like to know something about me, or keep reading. I'm still a poor grad student and working on my PhD. I don't really know whether this will become a book anymore, but it's not wholly improbable.
