like rain to a dry field

the sickness is slowly dissipating, held at bay by use of medicines here and there. it’s taken a week but it’s on its way out. I’ve just been trying to recuperate for the last few days and as a result haven’t done much else. I should have gotten out of the house more, as Nicole and I have probably been cooped up in here too long without enough fresh air and sunlight. (more…)

ὦ Ἀσκλήπιε, σοφώτατε παῖ Φοίβοιο Ἀπόλλωνος, ἀπάμυνε μοι τὸν λοίμον τὸν ὀλοόν, καὶ μάλ’ ἰάου με.
“O Askleipios, wisest son of Phoibos Apollo, ward off the ruinous sickness from me, and heal me greatly.”

since Sunday I seem to have come down with a rather nasty cold. It’s not the worst it could be, but it’s certainly no fun. Thankfully it fell upon me just after dear Anna left. I don’t know where it came from, but I hope it goes away soon. It’s been a little while at least since I was last sick, so that’s some consolation, but I have often said that I forget what it feels like to be healthy and strong when I fall sick. It’s true, because you just want to curl up, shut out the world, and throw it all to the winds. (more…)

the man of many turns

it’s been an interesting week, with highs and lows just like every other week, but this one has been quite special. last year about this time we were in the midst of Disneyland, soaking up the sun and whittling away the hours in ataraxic bliss. it’s not quite the same this year, although I wish it were, but it’s been nice nonetheless. two very important events occurred this week, and I can add a third that was less important but also noteworthy. subterranean lake

a calm, dark pool of utter blackness. no starlight penetrates the rock above, but there is luminescence down here, something welling up from the earth itself and lighting the otherwise-eternal night. it would be difficult to explore such places in real life, yet they do exist in the depths of caves. all I can do is fashion my own version with my mind, although there are accounts of such caves being extant. eidola in the dark

I’m writing notes on secondary scholarship for my thesis today, as I did yesterday as well. We watched Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull last night (which I’d just as soon call Indy 4), and I was overall unimpressed but I thought it was worth seeing at least once. Too much about aliens (although I heard Lucas wanted even more, such as rayguns and shit), and it felt often like The Mummy Returns, well, returned. It wasn’t a waste of time, but it just fell short, and that’s easy to do given the span since the last movie, and up to that which it had to live (thanks Olbermann!). (more…)

living on the plain of Troy

and December’s upon us, although November’s just barely begun, as one week dies and another begins in this cyclical paradise in which we live. I accomplished a good deal this weekend on my thesis, but I’m going to get a lot more done in the next week and a half before I meet again with my advisor. We meet again on the 21st, which happens to be my darling Nicole’s birthday as well. I want to find her a suitable gift, either something wrought myself or possibly bought, but nothing too extravagant, just something special and from the heart. But I’ll sort that out. (more…)

These days my entries have been more fractured and less focused. Such is life. I do what I can to give a glimpse into my life, a snapshot if possible. I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

talk to me if you'd like to know something about me, or keep reading. I'm still a poor grad student and working on my PhD. I don't really know whether this will become a book anymore, but it's not wholly improbable.

feel free to drop me comments on here, or even an email at:
