I’m right where I want to be, although it’s where I should have been a year ago. the balance has returned. On Thursday morning, around 2am, I finished my second and final incomplete, my paper for my Pompeii archaeology seminar. what started (finally) in early March, grew to 10 pages, then languished for two more months, eventually grew into a well-rounded ~22pg paper, plus a page for “works cited.” Brilliant. today was somewhat uneventful, but it was nice nonetheless. i’m tired and it’s almost 3am, so I’ll keep this rather short. last night I hung out with Brandi and her friends, and what was originally going to be a bonfire on the beach ended up being a party in her friends’ backyard, complete with a hobo-style fire in a big aluminum trash bin. it was a lot of fun overall. eventually we went to the beach, though, about 23.30, when no one else was really there. one more hurdle before I’m able to write my thesis properly. it’s something I should have finished a year ago, arguably, but it’s too late for that now. this weekend I’m going to knock my Archaeology (Pompeii) paper out of the park and finish the fucking thing once and for all. it’s also Memorial Day weekend, although it doesn’t faze me much. you’ll hear more on that from me later on. but otherwise, things are well. it’s been a busy week or so, for sure. the early part of the week was breezy and flew by. other than a lack of money from paying necessary bills, I’ve done well and been well. the weather has been nice overall. it’s making a nice transition from spring to summer, indeed. i’ve had entirely too much input today, I think. and probably a little too much wine. my eyes are clouded and i’m squinting, and the weather is apparently 75 degrees at this time of night, although that may be just the airport weather station. in any case, i’m a bit muddled at the moment and pretty tired for some reason. it was a good day, though. a long week has passed, and it’s nearly the end of its much-deserved weekend. LOST was amazing as usual on Thursday night, so watch it if you haven’t yet; that’s all I’ll say about that. I have been gearing up this week to write the draft of my paper for my seminar, and we had to submit a rough draft by Saturday. With nothing written and it being Wednesday, I made sure to check out some books, albeit through interlibrary loan, and hoped they would get here in time. they did, thankfully; I picked them up on Thursday night after work. one less problem at least. it’s been a long and interesting week. we finished up the lecture series with an absolute bang, a wonderful talk on Philoktetes and his eponymous play, and I’m glad to have closed it on such a great note. Pithos is finished as well, all done, printed and ready to go off to the printer on Monday. I’ve poured my soul into this issue, and the rest of us did as well, and it really shows — every word was scoured, every footnote, every emdash (at Nicole’s behest; I didn’t even realise I needed to do anything initially), and even the Sanskrit transliterations look beautiful. It looks a lot more polished than the last couple of years have, and I’m quite pleased in that respect, and so is Nicole. (more…)
