night and her daughters

beyond the veil now. my Latin MA exam went fantastically yesterday; I did wonderfully on the poetry (Catullus and Vergil), but the prose was harder (Caesar and Livy). I’d never read that part of Caesar before, and I’d never read Livy in Latin, so it was somewhat harrowing, but oh well. I think I did well, so I hope good results come in within a couple weeks.
i also had my first joyous experience with the ‘reserve book room’ in the library today, and checked out about six books (and turned four of them in) within about two hours. I had to do some research for a presentation for Archaeology on Monday; I bombed (I think) the one last Monday, so I’m determined to do better on this one. Anna is coming on Wed the 28th, too, and then staying until Sunday of that week, which will be great. Nicole will be gone that weekend, though, in Texas, at a classics conference at UT Austin, her dream school, and crashing at her friend Alleyne’s place. so both of us will have interesting weeks and weekends, albeit not so much together as the usual. (more…)

the immortal ides

may Caesar’s shade rest peacefully, and may his murderers be eternally tormented. for today was the fateful Ides of March, when the great general of old met his unfortunate end. Requiescat in pace, dive Caesar.
life is anything but plain and simple these days, however. my Latin MA exam is tomorrow (13.00), after wRk and class until 13.00. always fun. I’m pretty sure I’m going to pass the exam, but tonight I read over some Horace, Propertius, and a bit of Tacitus for good measure. The former two went very well; I read about seven (maybe nine? I can’t remember) odes from Book I, and I read about 3 of the poems from Book I of Propertius. Tacitus I read less of, but I’m pretty good at prose and poetry both, and thus am not all that worried. time to sleep soon, however, before tomorrow comes.
just so you know I’m still alive. I know this is somewhat of a stock phrase of mine these days, and with good reason, as you all know, but I still feel bad about it and wish I had more time to devote to writing. I miss it a lot, and I come back as often as I can. I’m going to be happy when summer rolls around and I’ve won through to the end of another year. in any case, sleep well. hundreds of thousands of stars shine down from above, and Ennius would say (perhaps Vergil too) that the heavens are studded with them. I wish I had more time to look at the sky than during my walk to the subway in the morning.

such a happy marriage

…between work and school and life. isn’t it? so i’ve not written in way too long, but i fear it’ll be a bit longer before I write something proper. tomorrow: latin exam, the first of the semester, one of three. Nicole and I studied Catullus 64 and the first ~400 lines of Aeneid 7 all weekend, and I think I’m ready. I haven’t even begun to read for archaeology tomorrow; that will happen tomorrow. right now I just want to crash I’m so tired. i couldn’t sleep well at all last night, and had terrifying, unsettling dreams while tossing and turning; Nicole didn’t sleep all that well either. my mum and dad sent me a Rome t-shirt they got online, which was sweet of them; I need to call them and thank them for it, and also ask if my bloody sister is coming for her spring break so I can plan on her visiting.
otherwise, life is good, just tired and burnt out. you don’t know how sweet it will feel to fall asleep tonight, believe me. i had cereal for the first time in a number of weeks (maybe a month or two) today, having some in the morning with Nicole and also some more tonight by myself, and it was fantastic. Crispix always is. we studied at the park today, Dolores Park, reading Catullus amid the glittering sunlight and the fantastic view from the crest of the hill (near the J stop at the top of the park). it was unseasonably warm today. my soul feels whole.
in any case, I’m going to look at some more Vergil and then crash for the night: devinciendus lumina somno, forsitan. have a wonderful night, everyone.

These days my entries have been more fractured and less focused. Such is life. I do what I can to give a glimpse into my life, a snapshot if possible. I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

talk to me if you'd like to know something about me, or keep reading. I'm still a poor grad student and working on my PhD. I don't really know whether this will become a book anymore, but it's not wholly improbable.
