so I’m absolutely elated, although absolutely exhausted at the same time, to have read some of the scanty fragments of the Orphic Theogony, a poem (or series of poems?) written around 500 BC. Epic diction reigns supreme, with augments omitted and syncopated forms, and all sorts of amazing epithets. It was a lot of reading and translating (and looking up words, some of which I couldn’t even find and thus had to piece together from their parts), but I finished it within about two hours. I don’t know if I understand all of it yet, but that’s what class is for, really.
sadly, I need to do a lot of reading before class tomorrow, as well as a 1-page summary answering questions about the material. There are not enough hours in the day, nor the week, I say. so at almost 1am, I’m going to sleep (an hour or half-hour later than usual, depending on my disposition). I leave you with the epithet that captivated me and inspired me to title this entry thus: ἀργικέραυνος. that is all. i’ll write more as soon as possible.

I, just as the others in my Latin class, have embarked upon a journey, and the journey begins with Aeneas and his band of Trojan refugees’ landing (and naming) of Caieta on the Italian coast. we just began Aeneid VII, which we’re going to be reading in Latin this semester, along with VIII and some extra epic-like grad reading. The first day of school was great, if you ask me, and I think my classes this semester are going to be fantastic. I got there somewhat early yesterday morning, making it to campus by perhaps 09.30 (earlier than usual for me), and soon I met up with Nicole and Krista to have breakfast. we talked and such, and Krista went off to teach her class not long afterwards, so I sat there with Nicole for a little while and finished breakfast before we went off towards Humanities. tomorrow is the first day of school, as some of you may know. the first day of spring semester. I am pretty much ready for everything to start; part of me wishes and longs for another week of love and languishing. Within the last couple of days, I started reading A Game of Thrones, the first book of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. it’s wonderful thus far, not disappointing in the slightest, and Nicole’s happy that I’m finally reading it. tonight I read the introduction to Early Greek Philosophy, the Penguin assigned for our Presocratics seminar, and I hope that that will help with the first seminar tomorrow. i almost lost this thought. the thing is, though, I was thinking about this last night before I went to sleep. I have often noted how interesting the nuances of conversation are. conversation is almost like music in a way, at least when done properly (many will say that much conversation can be gratingly dissonant). We swing from one topic to the next gracefully, when all is going at its best, almost as trapeze-artists. it’s a strange dance, indeed an art form. one thing melts into another, fading to black then fading into a state of perfect clarity in a different permutation. the whole thing amazes me. we humans are truly gifted with divine aspect and nature. I’m sure you’ve noticed it’s been rather cold lately. It was especially cold over at Nicole’s, where I spent Thursday through Sunday; the cold didn’t affect me nearly as much as it did her, though. In Oregon, according to Vanessa, it got as low as 19° (perhaps lower, I don’t know), but here it’s only gotten down into perhaps the mid- to low 30s. Not too bad, if you ask me. It figures, though, that when it actually snows for the first time in at least a year or two in Oregon, I’ve just left. The bastards. Oh well — we got some rain last night, which was interesting, although it threatened to destroy the Japanese artwork that Nicole purchased and was trying to transport home, unfortunately. (more…)

i am still here. and a happy new year to you all! the first post of 2007. it’s been awhile since I wrote, I know, and I will write something substantial in the near future. Busy lately — started back to work on the 3rd (I took the 2nd off, because I felt like it, muhahaha, and thank you President Ford, RIP), and been going ever since. thankfully, I am taking a four-day weekend this week — Martin Luther King, Jr. day is next Monday, and I’m taking Friday off as well. awesome. I finished the Dark Tower series, which was fantastic (except for the ending, which I’m somewhat ambivalent about, as I feel many are), and I am now fiending for the Complete Concordance (a limited run of 2000 signed slipcased copies, see?). I will buy it once I get my paycheck next week, most likely. (more…)
