quickly now

so it’s been a great time here. Christmas Eve and Christmas were great, and also, about a day after I got back, I saw The Good Shepherd with Leora, Claude, and Anna. it was a good fucking movie, albeit 3hrs long. I’m going home Saturday afternoon, which will be nice, since Nicole hasn’t fared all that well since I’ve been gone, and I want to get back so I can be with her. I’m enjoying my last few days here, though, the last I’ll be here in likely about three months or more. I’m 600 pages through Wolves of the Calla, the fifth Dark Tower book, and as a Christmas present to myself, I bought the sixth, Song of Susannah, yesterday at the mall. I haven’t read any Greek or Latin yet, but I will get around to it. (more…)

rushing towards the open skies and liquid aether

so I’ve finished packing my suitcase. it’s full of clothes, about 7/8 dirty, the rest clean. change of clothes ready for tomorrow, though — I planned ahead. surprisingly I got it all to fit in there, and I’m planning on putting my toiletry bag in there as well, so as to not have to fuck with security while I go through the scanners at SFO. my backpack is loaded with a copious amount of books, pretty much all Greek and Latin, with the sole exception of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass. I can’t wait to get to book 5. I am also done with my third semester of graduate school, as soon as I turn in my paper for Latin. (more…)

under the mountains

this is the latest I’ve been up in awhile. brings back memories of last year when I stayed up till 4am and sometimes 6am. everything is alright. wonderful, in fact. Nicole made it through her surgery yesterday (Monday, that is) with flying colours, and she’s doing great. her mum took her back to her hometown south of here, and she’s resting, relaxing, recovering for awhile now. more on that later. this is the latest I’ve been up in awhile. it feels nice having no (immediate) obligations; the only thing hanging over my head right now is my 5-page Latin essay, which will definitely be finished before its due date on Friday. tomorrow will likely be the day for that, I think, but not before a copious amount of sleep. it seems like the longer one sleeps, the stranger dreams occur — I know that was the way it was today. so let me attempt to reach back in my memory of the past few days and tell the following things (τάδε): (more…)

the hourglass runs low

if we didn’t have clearly delineated word-divisions, one could construe the title as “the hourglass, [yeah, you], run slow!” — a vocative and imperative, rather than the somewhat neutral statement we have here. sorry, I’m in a Greek and Latin frame of mind, as usual. so the semester is winding down. I’ll be done by next Friday at the latest. I’m attempting to study for my Greek exam Friday, my Latin exam Saturday (via email, thanks to my professor, so I don’t have to take it on Friday, the day I’m leaving for home), and write two papers. You all know that, though, as I believe I’ve drilled that in within the last couple of entries or so. (more…)

triumphans

it’s friday tomorrow. although I haven’t finished my Greek for tomorrow, I’m still rather happy. i haven’t been this happy in a long time. i feel serene, triumphant, enamoured with life. I suppose we are wont to feel that way near the end of semesters, college students at least — the advent of winter brings some happiness as well. beatifer or something. looking forward to going home, too, after finals are over, then coming back to spend New Year’s with Nicole. it’ll be fantastic. a pint of cold milk is fantastic as well — don’t underestimate its power. I bought one on the way home tonight, and it was everything that I thought it would be and more. (more…)

staring past greatness and polished posterity in the face

Quintus Ennius would have been proud. at least I hope he would have been proud of the portrait I painted of him with my presentation I delivered today. I feel victorious, vindicated, validated, although slightly versutus like Livius’ Odysseus. I look back from Vergil to Lucretius, Lucretius to Ennius, Ennius to Homer, and marvel at the skill with which each built upon their predecessors. Fucking amazing. I wrote about 12 pages last night for the presentation, and wrote them in around 4 or 5 hours after painstakingly researching ~8 books and synthesising their contents, at least the contents relating to my theme. I scanned in passages from the books this morning for my handout, which totaled 7 pages… I’m fucking burnt out. Both Latin and Greek were busts today; I had to pass in both, having not completed any of the assigned reading for the day due to focusing on the Prosem project. But it all worked out nonetheless. (more…)

These days my entries have been more fractured and less focused. Such is life. I do what I can to give a glimpse into my life, a snapshot if possible. I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

talk to me if you'd like to know something about me, or keep reading. I'm still a poor grad student and working on my PhD. I don't really know whether this will become a book anymore, but it's not wholly improbable.
