i assure you of my vivacity

I have not, contrary to popular belief, descended into the realm of the shades. however, the life of a grad student is often hectic, and I don’t really have much time to write anymore — even though I try. I miss writing, though, and I will try to write a bit more sometime soon, but this concise blurb is all I can do at the moment. I survived the Student Forum (and kicked its ass — my paper ruled, and so did Nicole’s!), and I am hoping I’ll survive the Prosem. life is good, though. I’ve not been happier in a long time. I’m hanging out with Brandi and Brian tomorrow, too, which should prove fantastic fun, and then I’m off to Nicole’s Saturday per the usual — wonderful! anyways, I trust you all are well, and hope to hear from you soon. I apologise again for my hiatus (that’s plural, here, at least). peace.

you are the cause of these things

- Thucydides, History of the Peloponnesian War 1.69.1

“And you [Spartans] are the cause of these things, first since you allowed [the Athenians] to strengthen their city after the Persian Wars and later to build the Long Walls, and since up to this point you continuously rob not only those who have been enslaved by them of their freedom, but you also rob your own allies now of freedom…” (my translation).

black bile

I just realised (and bounced this off of Nicole, also) that the word melancholy most likely (don’t quote me on it) comes from μέλας, “black, dark” + χόλος, “bile, gall” == “black bile,” hence the title of my entry. tonight I have Thucydides to read, as well as other stuff, although I probably won’t get to the other stuff. Our first Latin exam (on Petronius’ Satyricon) is tomorrow, and I think I’m ready; Nicole and I studied for it on Sunday. these days have gone by rather quickly, and I fear that I’m hurtling towards some unknown destiny at the end of the semester. well, not really, but things are going alarmingly fast. this necessitates my not writing as often, sadly. time immemorial

Ξ Monday, 02 Oct 2006 at 22:44 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Normal |

i am rather forgetful these days, and that is unlike me. in fact, i am not forgetful — I am only forgetful about writing and setting forth quotidian life as of late, which was my original aim, and what I’ve been best at in the past. the homework and studying involved this semester has prohibited me from doing so; for example, I no longer have (or choose to have, which is the case at times) four or five hours to sit down and crank out a longish post. Nor do I have the inclination to do so, for I’m rather exhausted and any free time I have is generally spent relaxing (i.e. wrapped up in bed with Nicole, or watching TV, or both, or doing something else relaxing).         These days my entries have been more fractured and less focused. Such is life. I do what I can to give a glimpse into my life, a snapshot if possible. I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

talk to me if you'd like to know something about me, or keep reading. I'm still a poor grad student and working on my PhD. I don't really know whether this will become a book anymore, but it's not wholly improbable.
