on thursday morning, right after i wrote my last post, i chilled for awhile, and i immersed myself in bucolic bliss, reading some Robert Frost… ahhhh, that felt good. it was a return to rustic, simpler times, a lovely departure. after that, i felt like watching Clockwork Orange or something, but I ended up just watching TV for a bit. around 4am, however, i was imbued with a strange new idea: watch the copy of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children that I grabbed off of BitTorrent earlier. oh yes. now I assure you, as soon as this movie drops on DVD in November, I’m buying the fucker. now if you saw FF: The Spirits Within (remember that awesome machine the main character had and used to record the video images of her dreams? fuck yeah!) and were impressed by its CG, Advent Children will blow you out of the motherfucking water. some of the most beautiful graphics I’ve ever seen, some of the most realistic-looking characters, and also an absolutely compelling (albeit strange and tortuous at times) story deeply rooted in the events of FFVII. if you’re a FFVII fan, then you’ll most likely love this movie… and well, if not, I wouldn’t really bother, unless you’re not averse to picking up a copy of FFVII, playing through it, and then watching the movie after all that.
fell into a dream-filled sleep around 06.00 or so that morning. fuck. i slept through pretty much most of the day, waking up initially around noon, then 2pm, then 4pm. i coulda kicked myself again for waking up so fucking late. however, although i said i was going to do my homework right away when i woke up, i didn’t end up getting to it until almost 1 or 2am. basically i fucked around and did nothing most of the day. apparently Ardi started going off about how ‘messy’ it is in our apartment when Charlie’s girlfriend Sara was here, and I thought that was funny as hell when I heard about it. Charlie all goes, “dude, I’m just gonna get a piss bucket for my room and we’ll see how messy he thinks it is then” (paraphrase).
i was able to make my mac and cheese correctly, borrowing some of Ryan’s margarine and cranking out a respectable batch of the stuff. i’ve been watching too much TV lately. i seriously must have watched almost every show in the book last night — i watched most of the movie Volcano, which is unbelievably bad, and then when the OC came on at 8, well, you know I was watching that (guilty pleasure, again — yet I’m still most likely going to buy season2). some other good shit was on as well, surprisingly — the show The War at Home with relatively new actor Michael Rapaport is actually pretty fucking hilarious, and I also ended up watching a few other things. I even managed to catch David Spade’s new Showbiz Show encore (after Seinfeld, Jon Stewart, and Adam Carolla’s Too Late), and it was fucking hysterical too. i think while I was watching Seinfeld, I called Claude and had a nice BS hour with him — hadn’t talked to him in a few days, so why the hell not? by the time I started my homework, we were watching the movie Maverick with Mel Gibson, which wasn’t half-bad either, and I eventually finished my Greek as best as I could and watched the rest of the movie. The movie ended fucking close to 6am I think, and then I got to bed (class at noon, bleh).
went to sleep not long after that. i woke up pretty much on the dot at around 11am, laid in bed for another 50 minutes, jumped out of bed, got dressed, packed up my backpack, booked it out the door to Latin. we ‘sightread’ through the Latin today — but this wasn’t normal sightreading — my Latin prof read us an English translation, and we tried to pick out the differences between the original and translation, especially what liberties the translator took. actually, we have to translate a piece of English prose into good Ciceronian prose, so I will post my translation up when I finish it (it’s due a week from today) — and with the background I’ve had in translating English to Latin (Latin composition, as well as writing my own Latin), I doubt it will be anything short of insanely fun.
flew upstairs like a shade to Greek. talked with Donni and this other girl (can’t remember her name, Kirstin or something?) outside of the classroom for a minute, and then we went in and sat down per the usual for class. our prof started off where we left off last time, and we proceeded fairly briskly through the translation, and then he called on me to read *after* the part which he’d assigned, and I, puzzled, said “what?” and then so he called on someone else. i felt like an idiot though, because i wondered if he had assigned more that I hadn’t read. bleh. it was ok though; we left not long afterwards, time having run out, and I booked it out of there, got some money at the ATM, and went down to the market. i had a crazy craving for salami, cheese, and Ritzes (like me and Jenn had way back when), so I went down to the market and bought some for lunch, as well as a root beer (root beer is great!!). went back home, threw the remaining part of my can of pork and beans into a bowl, micro’d it, ate it, then broke out the salami and cheese and such and put them on a plate.
I saw Ardi at the store, and he tells me that our place is ‘messy’ and we should clean it, and that Charlie’s shit was ‘all over the place’ and he wanted to talk to Charlie about all of it. I just kinda laughed it off and shrugged. He’d been gone since Monday, and so I asked him where he’d been the whole time, and he said he was at his parents’ house. Parents’ house? I know this kid lives fuckin close to here, but cmon, I even asked him straight up, “why are you spending $800/mo to live here if you aren’t ever here?” and he said “Well, I wanted to get out of my house and see how things were, but I just really like my parents’ house better.” I was all thinking man, you’re fucking SOL — i mean, the guy’s stuck in a year lease now, and breach of lease costs around a $1700 penalty. ouch. It seemed fucking retarded though to live here if that’s not really what he wanted to do. oh well.
I told Charlie what Ardi had said, and he just kinda laughed but at the same time looked somewhat stern, puzzling me. oh well. Ardi came back to the place for a second to get some things, and he also borrowed Sin City from me, since he hadn’t watched it before. i was watching Upright Citizens’ Brigade on Comedy Central, which used to be my friend Jordan’s favourite show in the world, and it actually is quite motherfucking funny if you watch it — they had babies in the ring fighting each other and shite, and other random things, such as a ‘dialect tournament’ to see who could do the most different dialects. weird shit. well, i hope my day isn’t sounding mundane and retarded to you all… i just put some dishes into the dishwasher, and now i’m just chillin here, listening to Yesterday’s New Quintet and other random music.
i think I completely forgot to mention that I am going to have the illest, illest possible Halloween costume in the world. well, maybe not the illest possible, but I think it’s going to be one of the illest. i’m going to go as dr. doom, or perhaps maybe even as MF DOOM, i don’t know. check this and this out, which i ordered on 14 september. now, look what my dear friend maeygan recommended I do:

yayor.
i keep thinking of the heights and depths as always. the brightness and light of the sky, of all the things inhabiting it. the chthonic depths of the earth, all the creatures and strange things embraced by the womb of the earth, and i guess it just makes me think about everything and how everything is related. we always dream of touching the stars, those far-off luminaries which we perceive to be star-shaped — but really, has anyone seen them with their naked eye and proven them to be small star-shaped mini-suns? yet we hold onto this belief because it is far more romantic to think of all the stars as being thus, and those brilliant points of light have inspired many a poet and philosopher as they seek truth, love, justice, and harmony within this imperfect world, blazing a path of brilliant poiesis towards the goal of making all mankind sublime and as imbued with inspiration and sweet, poetic song as they are by the lovely Helikonian Muses.
i know i’ve quoted this before, but what i just stated makes me think of Lucretius 1.78f:
quare religio pedibus subiecta vicissim
obteritur, nos exaequat victoria caelo
“wherefore religion, having been cast down beneath our feet, is trampled again, and victory makes us equal to heaven.”
this isn’t immediately germane, because it talks more about human triumph over the folly and pitfalls of religion than the triumph of poetry. in a way you could perhaps construe the victory as the victory or triumph of poetry being one of the greatest achievements of the human intellect. in fact, this reminds me of a great line of Gorgias (who we just read for my Attic Oratory class) from his Ελένης Εγκώμιον (“Praise of Helen,” Encomium of Helen):
τὴν ποίησιν ἅπασαν καὶ νομίζω καὶ ὀνομάζω λόγον ἔχοντα μέτρον
(Gorgias, Ελένης Εγκώμιον 9)
“I both think and call all poetry by name, ‘speech having meter.’”
wow, how fucking perfect is that? I mean, on one hand (μέν) Gorgias is saying that poetry is nothing more than speech endowed with glorious meter, but at the same time, it is a beautiful statement he makes about the inner mechanics of poetry and speech in general. i dont know, that just popped up into my head just now — i remembered it was one of my favourite arguments that Gorgias had made in the Encomium. fucking brilliant.
my brain is slightly fried at the moment. i know that i am going to see a movie later on tonight — probably Lord of War, but I’ll be around until then probably (not leaving for the movie until about 10 or so). call me if you’re beatus enough to have the digits. much love.

I always manage to miss Clockwork Orange. I always see it coming on TV at like 4 in the morning. I keep vampire hours but even I’m asleep by then.
You take Latin…wow, I’m impressed.
And lastly…
OMG…you should so do MF Doom for halloween. That would be sooooo hot. And call this corny, but maybe you could carry a radio around with you and play ALL CAPS as your theme music. I’m so excited for you. OMG…I probably sound like a total dork right now but Doom all the way. When are you coming to NYC so we can get into some hip hop?
